Car Tyres

How do I know if I need new car tyres?

  1. Tread depth: Tread depth is crucial for maintaining traction and grip on the road. One common method to check tread depth is by using a tread depth gauge. In the UK, the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6 millimetres across the central three-quarters of the tyre. If the tread depth is at or approaching this limit, it’s recommended to replace the tyres for optimal safety and performance.
  2. Tread wear indicators: Most modern tyres have built-in tread wear indicators, which are small rubber bars located within the tread grooves. These indicators become more visible as the tyre wears down. If you notice these bars becoming level with the tread surface, it’s a clear indication that your tyres are significantly worn and should be replaced.
  3. Irregular wear patterns: Uneven or irregular wear on the tyre’s surface can be an indicator of alignment or suspension issues. It’s essential to address these underlying problems, but it may also necessitate tyre replacement if the wear is severe or affecting the tyre’s overall integrity.
  4. Cracks, bulges, or blisters: Inspect your tyres for any visible signs of damage such as cracks in the sidewall, bulges, or blisters. These issues can compromise the tyre’s structural integrity and increase the risk of a blowout. If you notice such damage, it’s advisable to replace the tyre immediately.
  5. Age of the tyres: Tyres have a limited lifespan, even with adequate tread depth. As a general guideline, most tyre manufacturers recommend replacing tyres after six to ten years, regardless of the remaining tread. Rubber deteriorates over time, which can affect the tyre’s performance and safety.
  6. Loss of grip or increased road noise: If you notice decreased traction, longer braking distances, or increased road noise, it could be an indication that your tyres are losing their effectiveness. As tyres wear down, their ability to provide proper grip and control diminishes, impacting both safety and driving comfort.
